A 57-year-old Madison man will spend the next 20 years in prison following conviction for sexual battery against a seven-year-old child back in 2016.

Marcus Wade McCammon, 448 Pine Ridge Dr., was found guilty by a Madison County jury and sentenced to 30 years in prison, with the last 10 suspended. He will have to spend 20 years without the possibility of parole or early release. After 20 years, he will then be placed on five years of supervised probation and will have to register as a sex offender.

The assault stems back to Nov. 17, 2016, when Madison police were contacted regarding a sexual assault of a minor.

“Law enforcement went to the home and interviewed a family member of the child and made arrangements for a forensic interview of the child to be conducted by the Mississippi Children’s Advocacy Center,” a release from District Attorney Michael Guest stated. “During the forensic interview conducted by the CAC, the child disclosed that McCammon had forced her to engage in sexual contact with him.”

After being arrested by police, McCammon admitted to the act, Guest said.

“The verdict of the jury and the sentence imposed by the Court will require McCammon to spend the next 20 years behind bars paying his debt to society for the crimes he committed,” Guest said. “The verdict and sentence will also protect not only this child but others from possible abuse at the hands of the defendant.”

He added, “It took great courage for this child to face the defendant and to tell the jury about the abuse she suffered. Her testimony, along with the outstanding work of the Madison Police Department, provided the jury with the evidence they needed to return a verdict of guilty and has allowed us to remove a child predator from our streets.”
