CANTON - The body of a 21-year-old man found dead in the 300 block of Boyd Street in Canton has been identified as Nicholas Nichols, the authorities said.

Coroner Alex Breeland said Nicholas Nichols, found in the backyard of Canton resident Charles Young, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Nichols' family said he had been missing for about a week.

Canton Police Chief Otha Brown said the body showed signs of decomposition, although it was difficult to determine how long the body had been there when Young discovered it on Thursday, July 24. Security footage from an apartment building across the street, he said, could offer clues as to what happened to Nichols.

"We are looking at the footage for leads," he said, adding that the people were moving quickly, making it difficult to make out faces. "Somebody knows something. Somebody saw something. We are going to find out who."

Canton Mayor Arnel Bolden said the footage showed several men running away from the the scene, and that the matter is still under investigation.

"We may be able to identify possible suspects leaving the area," he said. "We take any criminal investigation in the city seriously. We want to make sure the criminals brought to justice. We are doing everything we can."

This is the third murder in Canton during 2014.
