Mississippi Wildlife Extravaganza

Come gear up and have fun at the 28th-annual Mississippi Wildlife Federation Wildlife Extravaganza at the Mississippi Trade Mart. Close to 200 exhibitors from all over North America and Canada will be in attendance as the MWF kicks off the hunting season with demonstrations, events and more. Kid's day is set for Aug. 1, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., and youngsters can enjoy demonstrations on handgrabbin' and high-flying retrievers. The Extravaganza will also be open Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12 and free for children 5-and-under. A $20 weekend pass is also available.As the MWF's largest fundraiser, the event will go to support efforts to preserve Mississippi's wildlife legacy. Tulane non-credit summer workshop

Facilitator Chris Webb hosts a non-credit lecture "Achieving Calm in the Midst of Chaos" at Tulane University's Madison campus from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Learn how stressors affect you psychologically and physiologically. Practice techniques to handle immediate stress, and review lifestyle behavior modifications that may improve your health and wellness.

Topics include deep breathing and visualization exercises, positive self-talk, time management and more.

Shelby Lynne at Duling Hall

Renowned Nashville country music star Shelby Lynne comes to Jackson's Duling Hall for one night. Lynn'es latest release, the Tahnks EP (2013), has been heralded and noted for its gospel-influenced gems by the New York Times.

August 4-8

Ridgeland Creative Craft Camp

Teenagers 13 to 15-years-old can take a hand-crafted journey through the world of memories. They will learn the history of each of the crafts and personalize each piece with memorable pieces of their own.

Master craftsmen from around the state will gather to teach your child a variety of crafts, including pottery, fiber, wire sculpture, mosaics, fused glass and much more. A reception will be held Friday, August 8, from noon to 1 p.m. to show off the artwork created at the camp.

Cost is $185 for the first child and $160 for the second (within the same family).

Back-to-School event

North Madison County Excel By 5, in conjunction with Canton Parks and Recreation, will host a Back-to-School event on from 9 a.m. to noon at the Canton Community Center at 337 N. Union St.

Excel will be giving away free book bags and school supplies for preschool and kindergarteners as long as supplies last. Booths will also be set up to provide parents information and an awareness of different resources that are available to children and families. Parents must accompany children under 5 in order to receive the free backpack and school supplies.

Just Have a Ball 5K

Join Fleet Feet Sports and other sponsors for this fun-filled event that begins and ends at Fleet Feet Sports in Ridgeland. Proceeds will be donated to The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi - a non-profit that raises awareness for childhood obesity in the Magnolia State.

Awards will be given to the top male and female runners and walkers in overall and masters categories. Age group awards will be given for first place in 10 different year age groups for both female and male walkers and runners.

Race will start at 7:30 a.m., with packet pickup running from 3-6 p.m. on August 8. Day-of-the-race registration will also be available. Participants can register online at www.raceit.com/register/?event=28011.

"Murder In the Key of Motown"

Fringe Dinner Theatre, an affiliate of the Mississippi Murder Mysteries, is partnering with Rossini Cucina Italiana in Ridgeland to offer patrons the tale of Jack Russell and the Terriers - a washed up Motown band still trying to get gigs in the 1980s.

The audience is invited to sing along as the band attempts to perform snippets of Top 40 hits in the style of artist from Motown to the totally awesome 1980's.

Miss. Murder Mysteries, a professional murder mystery troupe based in Jackson, has been entertaining audiences throughout the region for nearly a decade.

Rhythm & Blues Festival

The City of Jackson is proud to host the 2014 Jackson Rhythm and Blues Festival at the Mississippi Agricultural Museum.

This year's theme is "Jackson: City with Soul" and headliners include Ziggy Marley, son of legendary Reggae star Bob Marley, 2004 American Idol-winner FANTASiA and 90's hip-hop group Bell Biv DeVoe.

Bright Lights Belhaven Nights street festival

The 10th anniversary of Bright Lights Belhaven Nights street festival will be Saturday, Aug. 16, in the historic Belhaven Neighborhood.
