Germantown Band members line up after winning the 2017 5A State Championship.
The Germantown High School Band became the 5A champions in the State Marching Championships this past weekend.

Band Director Justin Harvison said that he was proud of the way his students ended their season at the competition in Pearl.

This was the second time in the program’s seven years they took top honors. Last time was in 2013.

“It was a great way to end a great season,” Harrison said. “I really think they gave their best performance of the year and it’s always nice to see the hard work and determination culminate in the final performance of the competition season.”

Germantown took first place in general effect music, general effect visual, music performance ensemble, music performance individual, visual performance individual and percussion. The band recorded no penalties. They also earned third place ratings in Color Guard and visual performance.

The band is made up of 136 students, 24 of whom are seniors.

They will host an encore performance of their show, “Run for the Roses,” at Germantown Thursday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m.

The GHS band assistant directors are Allison Taylor, Josh craft, Jim Peacock, Carrie Swindoll and Justin Craft.

Ridgeland High School was also present for the competition. They took 10th place overall and took fifth in color guard.
