MADISON — Police are still investigating the origins of a box that exploded on the side of Rice Road early on the morning of Dec. 31.

Madison Police arrived shortly after receiving a report of the explosion around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and found the remains of a cardboard box that left debris in the roadway.

MPD called in the Jackson Police Department’s bomb squad to inspect two other cardboard boxes in the woods near the site of the explosion, but discovered no explosives inside them. Law enforcement officers from the U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Mississippi Department of Homeland Security and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force also responded to the call.

Police temporarily shut down Rice Road between Tidewater Lane and Wright’s Mill Drive, but the roads were re-opened in time for the morning commute.

Local law enforcement is providing aid to federal investigators looking into the incident.
