Two road projects being funded from an $8 million road bond came in well under estimates leaving supervisors hopeful they will be able to tackle more projects with the funds.

Robinson Springs Road was estimated to cost $2.5 million. Walters Construction Co., Inc., of Laurel won the job with the low bid of $1,986,462.12.

Tisdale Road was estimated to cost $1.2 million. Hemphill Construction Co., Inc., of Richland won the job with the low bid of $940,951.

Board President David Bishop said he hopes that bids for Virlilia Road, which will come in later this month and are estimated to cost $2.28 million, will also come in under the estimate.

“Maybe we can get lucky on that one, too,” he said. “I’m excited about all these things coming in under. I think it’s looking good.”

Bishop said the way things are looking they might be able to spread the money out further than originally anticipated if there are no surprises or cost overruns along the way.

District 1 Supervisor Sheila Jones said she was very pleased that the engineers’ estimates were high.

“That’s additional money for roads that weren’t on the five-road plan,” she said. “Maybe we can get Weisenberger Road fixed. That should be our next priority.”

Back in August, supervisors voted 3-2 to prioritize the $8 million bond money on five projects — Robinson Springs, Virlilia, Tisdale, North Deerfield Drive and Harvey Crossing. North Deerfield at an estimated price tag of $700,000 and Harvey Crossing is estimated to cost $600,000. Both are still in the planning stages.

Supervisors only accounted for $7.3 million in bond funds, leaving approximately $700,000 for overruns. With the first two projects coming in under estimates, that leaves close to $1.5 million in unappropriated money that can only be used on certain road projects. Those projects include: Cherry Hill Drive ($350,000), Park Place Boulevard ($250,000), Greens Crossing ($350,000), Stokes Road Bridge ($375,000), Sunnybrook Road ($700,000), Weisenberger Road (no estimate), Yandell Road (no estimate) and Reunion Parkway (no estimate).
