Ridgeland’s Olde Tyme Commissary, one of the oldest independent toy stores in the country, will celebrate its 45th birthday Oct. 7 with an in-store party that will include cake, kids, and coloring sheets – and no small amount of reminiscing with friends who’ve supported owner Sandra Tucker Weber in the Jackson metro area since 1972.

Friends, customers and well-wishers are invited to visit Weber and her staff from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the shop at the Renaissance in Ridgeland. Children’s activities will include storytelling, face painting and coloring; and adults may RSVP via Facebook to be eligible to win gift cards to be given away each hour.

“When I opened my shop in Jackson in 1972 I did not foresee that 45 years later I would still have a business, and for that I thank my many loyal customers,” Weber said. “Those children whose parents were my first customers are now shopping for toys for their grandchildren!

“It’s amazing to realize how much some of the toys have changed, but, along with the new ones, we still offer the classic, old-fashioned toys and games, and the original hand painted, personalized gifts that generations of customers have enjoyed.

“I can’t thank them all enough and I hope they’ll come out to share a piece of cake and some memories with us on Oct. 7,” she said.

The shop shares space with its sister store, Inside Out, a gift shop known for its unique pottery and original works by Mississippi artists.
