No state sales tax will be collected on articles of clothing and footwear that cost $100 or less and are purchased between Friday 12:01 a.m. and midnight Saturday.
The temporary sales tax holiday was approved in the 2009 legislative session through the leadership of state Sen. Walter Michel, whose District 25 responsibilities include Madison and Hinds counties. Taxes are neither collected nor paid during the period.
"Clothing" is defined as any article of apparel designed to be worn on the human body, including pants, shirts and blouses, dresses, coats, jackets, belts, hats, undergarments and multiple piece garments sold as a set,
"Footwear' is defined as any article of apparel for human feet except for skis, swim fins, roller blades, skates and other similar items.
"Accessories"defined as jewelry, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches, backpacks, briefcases and similar items do not qualify for the holiday exclusion.
Additional information is available in most stores, many of which have extended shopping hours to take advantage of the holiday.
Only 14 Mississippi communities, none of which are in the Madison County area, have decided not to participate in the program.
