The Lucky City has officially declared the month of May as National Bike Safety Month and encourages all citizens to take part and hop on a bike.

Alderman Jayce Powell introduced the resolution to the board during their May 9 meeting and talked about the importance of bike safety.

“May is National Bike Month designated by the League of American Bicyclists and has been celebrated in the community since 1956,” Powell said.

The board recognized several leaders from local cycling communities including Arree Williams and Kendra Patterson with Soul City Cycling, Johnny David with Tri County Mountain Bike Association, Bernie Brenneman with MagRidge BMX, Ricky Luke with Jackson Metro Cyclists, Michelle Williams, Holland Smith, and Caleb Watkins with the Mississippi NICA Organization.

The city thanked these leaders for all they do to serve the cycling community and helping get adults and youth alike engaged in the sport.

“The community is large with biking and we have a lot of people who get out and enjoy it,” Powell said.

Alderman Powell made the motion to approve the resolution, and Alderman Wesley Slay seconded the motion. The resolution passed unanimously.
