Friendship Park closed until further notice

RIDGELAND — The temporary closure of Friendship Park has been extended until further notice as crews work to remove dead and hazardous trees and complete scheduled park maintenance, Recreation and Parks officials said.

Crews will be working diligently to minimize disruptions and complete the work as efficiently as possible, John Sidney North, director of Recreation and Parks, said.

“We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we make these important improvements to Friendship Park,” North said.

North said the delays are due to weather and equipment problems.

“The closure is necessary to ensure the safety of visitors and to enhance the long-term health of the park’s natural environment,” North said.

The work includes the removal of dead and dying trees that pose safety risks, maintenance and repair of park facilities and trails, and general upkeep to “preserve the park’s beauty and functionality.”

The work was initially slated for completion on Jan. 21. This is the third delay the Parks and Recreation Department has announced. Previously, the park was supposed to reopen on Monday, Feb. 3, and another opening date was set for Tuesday, Feb 11, in late January.

The indefinite “until further notice” closure was announced by city staff on Monday, Feb 10.
