Lady Mavericks capture state title

The Germantown Lady Mavericks took home their first-ever MHSAA Class 6A State Championship on March 4 to end their season with a bang. 

Head Coach Jamie Glasgow said the girls played a great season finishing 29-2. 

“We lost to Choctaw Central early in the season by one point and to Hoover High School out of Alabama in December,” Glasgow said. “We won our region, and played very well in the playoffs. We had several players step up and play the best ball they’ve played all season.” 

Glasgow said the biggest season highlight besides taking home the state title was defeating Madison Central in overtime to win the regional. 

“We played them four times this year and they knew us well,” she said. 

The girls capped off their season with a win against Tupelo High School in the championship game, winning 64-43. 

Glasgow said this is the Lady Mavericks’ fourth time to visit the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson to play in the state championship. 

“We were runner-ups two years ago when we lost the state championship by four points, so it felt good to win this time,” she said. “We were really excited and our experience being there helped us and put us over the edge this year.”

This year, the Lady Mavericks team had three seniors, five juniors, four sophomores, and two freshmen. 

“We’re losing three seniors this year, but I expect a really good season next year since we still have a lot of talent,” Glasgow said. “When we return from spring break we’re getting back in the weight room and lifting weights and we’ll start picking basketball back up in April. We have good players coming back, and some who were out this year with injuries are also coming back”

One of the Lady Mavericks’ graduating seniors, McDonald’s All-American Madison Booker, was named Mississippi Gatorade Player of the year. 

Booker ended her season with a state championship win and is a two-time USA Basketball gold medalist and University of Texas signee. She is also ranked number three in the country in her class. 

“It was a perfect ending to Madison’s career and as you saw, we aren’t all Madison,” Glasgow said. “We’ve got some other girls who can play, and they work hard every day and I’m so proud of them. They went out there and played ball.”
