Local soccer teams finding postseason success

Area soccer teams are already deep into the state tournament, with multiple teams eyeing state titles.

After a region title, the Madison Central boys advanced with a 2-0 first round win over Southaven on Tuesday night and move on to host region rival Starkville in the MHSAA 7A quarterfinals.

The Madison Central girls also won their first round matchup in a 3-0 victory over DeSoto Central and will also advance to the 7A state quarterfinals against region foe Tupelo, while the Germantown girls saw their season come to an end in the first round of the 7A state tournament with a 4-1 loss to Oxford. 

In 6A, the Ridgeland girls won their first round matchup in the 6A state tournament by a score of 1-0 over Grenada and will advance to take on Saltillo in the quarterfinals, while the Ridgeland boys fell 3-1 to Olive Branch in their first round matchup. 

In 5A, the Canton boys fell 4-3 to Pontotoc in the first round of the MHSAA 5A state tournament, while the Canton girls fell 8-0 to New Hope in their first round matchup. 

St. Andrew’s has seen massive success so far in the MHSAA Class I state tournament, with both teams being dominant so far and securing a spot in the quarterfinals.

The St. Andrew’s girls won 16-0 over Coahoma County in the first round and 7-0 in the second round over Mooreville, and will play the winner of Strayhorn-Booneville in their quarterfinal matchup. As for the St. Andrew’s boys, the Saints won 12-0 over Coahoma County and 4-1 over Tupelo Christian Prep, and will take on Vardaman in the state tournament quarterfinals. 

In MAIS action, the Division I state tournament will begin on Thursday with four area teams in action. Jackson Academy opens as the three-seed and will host six-seeded St. Joseph on Thursday, while five-seed MRA will travel to take on four-seeded Presbyterian Christian on Thursday as well. Jackson Prep finished second in the Division I standings and will host the winner of Jackson Academy-St. Joseph in the Division I semifinals on Monday.
