Madison gets lifesaving Lenco armored vehicle

MADISON — Law enforcement officers here have a new $258,000 Lenco BearCat special service armored vehicle that officials said will be used to save lives in critical situations.

“It will serve as a lifesaver to use more in critical incidents,” said Kobi Medlock, Special Response Team commander and patrol officer for the Madison Police Department.

Medlock said the vehicle could protect officers and citizens from gunfire and be used in natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and others.

“This is a four-wheel-drive vehicle,” Medlock said. “It can traverse through 2 feet of standing water, and it’s also Category 4 hurricane wind-speed rated. So, it’s a dual-purpose type vehicle the Madison Police Department has invested in.”

The Madison Mayor and Board of Aldermen approved the purchase of the vehicle in the board’s Nov. 16 meeting, and the vehicle was delivered last week.

Medlock said the city did not have an armored vehicle before the city purchased this one.

“This would definitely be an upgrade for us,” Medlock said. “We do not currently have a vehicle like this. This is just a tool. It definitely will not be out on the street patrolling on a day-to-day basis. It is just a tool for critical incidents. It is a lifesaving tool.”
