A Gluckstadt man was arrested after shooting a deer in front of the new police station.

The man, Gleen Sanders, 61, of Gluckstadt, was arrested and charged with discharging a firearm inside city limits, according to Police Chief Barry Hale.

Sanders was also issued three citations by the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.

According to Hale, officers were standing outside the station on Gluckstadt Way on Dec. 14, at about 7:30 a.m. when they heard gunshots.

Sanders was detained for shooting a deer on Old Church Road across from the PD after officers investigated the shots.

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks was notified, and an officer arrived shortly, Hale said.

Following Sander’s arrest, his 20-gauge shotgun was collected for evidence purposes and placed into evidence.

Sanders was released on a $500 cash bond.

“Mr. Sanders did share with us that if he would have known the police department was open he wouldn’t have shot the deer,” Hale said.

MDWFP also confiscated the carcass of the deer Sanders shot.

Hale said the discharging of the firearm in the city would not have been illegal just a few months ago after the city board passed a firearms ordinance at the Oct. 8 regularly scheduled meeting.
