Madison Central and Velma Jackson are one win away from playing for the state title, with extremely important semifinal matchups looming this week. 

The Mississippi High School Activities Association announced their initial classification realignment for 2025-2027 on Tuesday night, with some major changes coming for area schools. 

Jackson Prep’s bid for an undefeated season and the program’s 23rd state title came up just short on Saturday night at Mississippi College, falling 19-14 to Hartfield Academy in the MAIS 6A title game for the second year in a row.

Tri-County Academy continued their dominance of MAIS 4A on Friday night, defeating Bowling Green 27-3 for the program’s second straight title and third championship in the last four years.

Madison County rivals Madison Central and Germantown will meet in the MHSAA quarterfinals on Friday night, marking the first time in history that these two teams have met in the playoffs.

Tri-County Academy and Jackson Prep will both be playing for Midsouth Association of Independent Schools championships this weekend, with both looking to secure an undefeated season and a state title. 

It’s a huge week for Madison County football, as six area teams remain on their run through the playoffs.

MRA saw their season come to an end in a 17-14 loss to Hartfield Academy in the MAIS 6A semifinals on Friday night, finishing 9-3 on the season. 

Coach Doug Goodwin stood in the middle of the football field surrounded by his players, holding up one finger. Though his words were inaudible under Kool and The Gang’s “Celebration” blasting over the stadium speakers, anyone could see his mouth for two words—“One more.”

Singleton ran for 225 yards and five touchdowns in Madison Central’s 49-39 win over Clinton that helped the Jaguars secure a home playoff game. 

Velma Jackson Senior Tyshun Willis was awarded with the MHSAA 1A Mr. Football last week, making it the second year in a row that a player from Velma Jackson has won the prestigious award.

MRA will host Hartfield Academy in the MAIS 6A semifinals on Friday night, in what will be one of the most highly anticipated rematches of the season.

Canton Academy saw their season end in heartbreaking fashion at the hands of Greenville St. Joseph for the second consecutive season, falling 22-14 in the quarterfinals of the MAIS 3A playoffs. 

Madison Central went into a road matchup with rival Clinton and came out with a huge 49-39 win on Thursday night, clinching the two-seed in Region 2-7A and at least one home game in the 7A playoffs.

The football postseason journey will begin this week for a majority of the high school football teams in the Madison County area.

The St. Andrew’s Cross Country program earned a clean sweep in the MHSAA 2A state championship meets, winning both the girls’ and boys’ team titles.

With area playoff action starting this week, there will be few better matchups than Canton Academy hosting Greenville St. Joseph in a rematch of last year’s MAIS 3A semifinals.
